2014

An immersive light installation commissioned by the Italian watch maker Panerai for the 2014 London Design Festival exploring the theme of time.

The term ‘Candela’ comes from the standard unit of luminous intensity: a common candle emits light with a luminous intensity of roughly one candela. Displayed in the V&A’s darkest space, the Tapestry Gallery, the installation experiments with the luminescent properties of Super-LumiNova a material used on the dials of wrist watches.

A large disc coated in Super-LumiNova slowly rotates and passes through a programmable UV light source. The continual revolution of the machine creates a perpetual ebb and flow of light patterns that travel across its face.

Designed in collaboration with ceramic designer Ian McIntyre.

Triennale di Milano acquired Candela for their permanent collection in 2018.
