First shown at the Science Museum, London – Beyond the Lab toured to 29 countries across Europe. The exhibition tells the stories of nine different innovators who use crowd-sourced data, community lab projects and DIY apparatus to revolutionise front-line scientific research.

The exhibition design scheme, led by Andres Ros and DPM utilises a Meccano-like timber construction material. Grid Beam evolved in 1970s California under the influence of counterculture figures Ken Isaac and Victor Papanek that encouraged a DIY, open source approach to design.

Perforated steel panels allowed full flexibility to update graphic text panels to the languages spoken at each location.

Photographer Angela Moore was commissioned to take portraits of each citizen scientist. These were used at human scale to highlight their importance.
