–Hello, Robot.
2019
Hello, Robot. – Design between Human and Machine, is a touring show curated by Vitra Design Museum, Museum of Applied Arts, Vienna and the Design Museum Gent. DPM were commissioned by V&A Dundee to adapt and redesign the exhibition to suit its 1,100sqm temporary exhibition space.
Through a series of questions hung over each exhibition section, visitors are asked to consider their feelings about robotics taking on a growing role in human life.
The 1939 film ‘The Middleton Family at the New York World's Fair’, was a key influence on the exhibition design – the film depicts a gold robotic servant being launched. Expositions like The World Fair, the Festival of Britain, or the Millennium Experience offered insight into future life – the design of Hello, Robot. aims to capture this optimistic atmosphere. To achieve this the exhibition is divided into four distinct galleries each with its own architectural moment. These spaces act like exposition pavilions or zones.
Illustrator Jay Cover was commissioned to introduce a hand drawn, human element and counter the industrial aesthetic of the material palette. To convey the gallery's key theme, each gallery begins with an illustration accompanied by an introduction text.
