–Victorian Virtual Reality
2023
Victorian Virtual Reality explores highlights from Sir Brian May’s archive of stereoscopy – a nineteenth-century photographic process that enabled images to appear in 3D.
The Queen guitarist’s first stereocard was a free gift discovered inside a Weetabix packet, he has since acquired an extensive collection of Victorian stereoscopic photographs and early viewing devices. The images show aspects of Victorian life, travel, celebrity portraits, street scenes, and ghostly apparitions.
Many of the original stereocards are framed within two arches. This motif – and the bright yellow coloured card commonly used – is referenced in the exhibition design.
