Waltham Forest Town Hall

Signage and Way-finding

2022

Hawkins Brown architects have restored and modernised Waltham Forest’s elegant 1940s Swedish classical style town hall. Workspaces have been modernised and the chamber and civic rooms transformed to house both community celebrations and council business.

Constructed during World War II, the art deco interiors were panelled with wood veneer salvaged from bomb damaged buildings. DPM developed a sympathetic signage and way-finding scheme that plays off the use of multiple species of wood and references art deco features without creating pastiche facsimiles.

The scope extended to a family of clocks for the civic rooms and chamber room. Granby, an early twentieth century typeface was chosen to compliment the interior style. Cardinal points are displayed in Kessler, a modern typeface influenced by the same period.
